Play set Pictures

Here are the pictures I promised...

This is our backyard before the play set construction began.

This is the garage with the boxes unpacked and all the pieces laying in groups.

Bryan built the towers in the garage. He got the small one in the backyard by himself. I helped him get the big one back. We put it on a tarp and pulled it back. I'm not going to lie, it was heavy, and I am not a strong person.

The finished swing set with my two favorite people! The climbing wall isn't finished yet because he needs different fasteners - the ones that came with the set weren't working the way he wanted them to.
We've played on the swing set every nice evening this week. It's practically impossible to get her off to go inside and eat dinner. I hope she enjoys it for a very long time.
Today I'm thankful for:
  • a handy husband
  • a work week that seems to have gone faster than the usual
  • a baby that enjoys being outside

He's bought himself a few weeks!

I love this guy. He's pretty great, and let's not forget the good looks. But this isn't about his good looks, it's about how I know he loves Anna and would take all his free time to give her what he knows she would love.
I think I've mentioned how B and I have "discussions" (kind of like a fight without the meanness - you might think it's bc we're so evolved, but really I'm not much of a fighter) about how I feel like I do all the everyday stuff, and yes, I know he does a lot of things around the house, but those are just sometimes stuff. Well, I'll give him a break for a few weeks bc he just finished Anna's play set today!!!!

Anna LOVES to be outside; in fact she'll repeat the word 'outside' until you give in or make her think of something else. We play in the front yard, and we play in the backyard, but she has that whole 5 minute attention span thing, so we run out of things to do. Since she LOVES to be outside and she loves the park, we thought we might as well bring it to our backyard. We went with this CedarWorks set. It was more money than we really wanted to spend initially, but it's all in the opportunity cost: no sanding or staining - ever, and it comes with many parts already assembled.

The 9 boxes were delivered on Monday, and B got to work unpacking the boxes and beginning a little assembly. He continued the assembly of different parts (the two towers and the ladders) in the garage throughout the week until the final assembly was left. The weather wasn't really on our side for this one, but he got a break today. B woke up at 7 and worked non-stop until 3 when everything was finally in place! Is he amazing or what? He's really a great dad and hubby, even if he doesn't change poopy diapers if there is someone else to do it (me):)

Anna swung (sp check said that's what it should be, but it looks so wrong) on her baby swing, then with me on the big swing, then by herself on the big swing, and then repeated, and repeated, and repeated, she climbed up the ladder and went down the slide several times, and she even climbed the ramp with the rope. She has this whole impatientce thing that shows up even when she's enjoying herself on the swings: she just slides right off regardless of the fact that it's still moving! She was so happy.

We came in for dinner and it was starting to rain, and she continued to ask to go outside on the swings. I think it's a winner! If you're looking for something to do this summer , come on over- you know where we'll be ... on the kick ass swing set my awesome husband built!!! I told you he loved her.

Pictures soon - the battery died on the camera, and I'm too lazy to charge it right now.

Today I'm thankful for:

  1. good enough weather so B could put the swing set up.

  2. a husband that loves our daughter with all his heart

  3. a really great book: Girls' Poker Night by Jill A. Davis

Anna's Birth Story

I like hearing people tell about their pregnancy and birthing experience(s). Maybe you do. Maybe you don't. But here's my pregnancy and birthing experience...

I realized I was pregnant a few days after getting hired at my new job (my current school). I remember talking to B in the parking lot telling him that the pregnancy test was positive. He said, "don't get too excited. You better talk to the doctor first." We are SO romantic. I'll try to be more romantic if there's a next time.

Week 6 came and...the sickness stayed through month 6. Mostly in the morning, sometime before lunch. I was horribly tired and had no energy at all - the whole pregnancy. I was not a good pregnant person. I am very jealous of people that feel great during pregnancy, because I was definitely not myself.

During my pregnancy I really had to be on top of my diabetes care and blood sugars. I took good care of myself, and I think that's why Anna was healthy when she was born. Even though I took care of myself, she still got really big - which is common for babies of diabetic mothers.

By month 8, I was swollen with water weight and was uncomfortable sitting and standing. I guess Anna was uncomfortable too, because she came early. It was a Friday after school and I wanted Frisch's. I remember sitting on the steps in the house while B was getting ready, and I felt WEIRD. I thought maybe it was heartburn or Anna was pressing on my lungs. I remember I was wearing a yellow long sleeved shirt and jeans. I can still see myself sitting on the steps - like I'm looking at myself. We went to Frisch's then came home. I could not sleep. I tossed and turned all night - still felt WEIRD. I guess I was having a lot of contractions; I had been having contractions up to that point, so it wasn't too different. I decided to call the doctor. I waited until 6 am because I didn't want to bother the Dr. or B from sleep. The doctor told me to go the hospital to be checked out. I figured they would send me home with heart burn. I was wrong.

The nurses put me in the booby-room. I call it that because it was right on the end and didn't have all the furniture and equipment it should have had. I guess they thought I would be going home too. I really had no idea I was in labor; it was a month before her due date. My water didn't break and I didn't lose my mucus plug (ewe, gross). I had no shower, no camera, no bag, no pillow, none of the 'stuff' I planned on having (we were planning on going shopping for all that stuff later that day). When the nurse checked me she said, "you are fully effaced and 2 cm dilated."

I said, "what does that mean?"

She said, "you're in labor. I'll get the Dr."

He came in and double checked and said, "you're going to have the baby today at 8." (I had already planned for a c-section because of the size of Anna relative to the size of me.)

I said, "are you serious?"

Dr. said, "yes, we'll get things going."

I said something to the effect of, "No, I can't have a baby, I don't have anything here. I don't even have a camera."

He said, "you're going to have the baby today. Use the camera on your cell phone." So we did. Those pictures are now lost in cell phone cyber space now, but that's ok. It's what is is.

Then all the people started coming in to get me ready. Then I felt the contractions - the painful ones in my back that you think about people in labor having. B called our family, and I tried to prepare myself to have a baby.

The things I remember from surgery: the Dr. had to use forceps to get Anna out even though I had a c-section. He said, "you should name her Bertha; she's a big girl." I also heard, "Look at all that hair!" I was nervous until I heard her cry, and still to this day, I don't think I have heard a more beautiful sound. She was born at 8:44 am weighing in at 8.15 - I told you she was a big girl. ( I am convinced she would have been a 12 pounder had I gone full term). I saw her for a second, then she was whisked away to the NICU Observation. I knew she would be taken away right away; the Drs prepared me for that. She had to have her blood sugar monitored until her body could regulate itself. While I was in recovery my family arrived and watched Anna: she had a bath, ate from a tube, breathed on her own, ate from a bottle, had her new baby tests done, and got her blood sugar regulated without having to be admitted to the actual NICU.

After I finally got to meet Anna I thought: so this is my baby, I can't believe she has so much hair, she looks just like Bryan, she is so chubby, she is so beautiful. I'm one lucky momma.

The only minor complication Anna had from being born prematurely was jaundice. She had to be under the bilirubin light. I don't really remember this moment, but B said he came back to the room (after going home to let the dog out or shower or whatever), and I was sitting on the bed crying because she was under that light all by herself with only a diaper on. She looked so lonely lying in that bed naked. I just wanted to pick her up and hold onto her, but she needed to get healthy first, and she did.

A few other memorable moments from the hospital:
  • B changed most of the diapers, including the first one which he was certain there was something wrong. We called the nurse for confirmation that she was OK and the tar-like poo was normal. I told him it was, but he didn't believe me.
  • B slept through all of her nighttime cries at the hospital. He was so beat.
  • I kept apologizing to the nurses for my grossness since I hadn't had a shower since the morning before. They said they didn't care, but I still felt nasty.
  • B had to give me a shower. It was not pretty. It was not romantic. It was a good showing of true love.
  • While Anna was still in observation and the medicine hadn't worn off, I kept saying, "it's ok she isn't here. I don't think I could hold her anyway. My arms feel so funny." My step mom thought this was hilarious. She still laughs about this.
In the end, all was good - we got to take her home in the normal amount of time, and the weather was perfect and beautiful for the first few weeks of her life. Anna and I hung out, slept, and took walks that first summer.

Today I am thankful for:
  • a healthy baby
  • strawberries
  • great family

What's the Birthday Girl up to?

Anna update...

She:

  • is finally starting to talk. It took her a little longer than some kids I know, but she is still in that 'normal' range, but you know it had me worried. It's pretty cute. She watches how I say things then she tries to repeat - sometimes she gets it, and sometimes she doesn't, but she keeps trying. It seems like she picks up a new word or two everyday. Some of her new words: shoes, outside, swings, 2 of her friends' names, water, chalk, car.

  • prefers to run most places.

  • LOVES to be outside more than anything - especially on the swings or slide.

  • still doesn't watch TV.

  • is a pretty good eater - everything from fruit and cheese to candy and junk food (not too much though!)

  • likes to eat ice and popsicles.

  • likes to say "hi" to all the neighborhood dogs

  • is very curious

  • is very determined

  • is very independent

  • likes to be held - when she wants to be held

  • likes to be the boss, or at least tries to be the boss

  • doesn't like to have her picture taken

  • is shy with new people at first, but then is very friendly

  • likes going to day care to be with her teachers and friends

  • LOVES to listen to stories

  • is getting better at going places (grocery, stores)

  • throws tantrums on a daily basis - multiple tantrums a day really - usually because she isn't getting her way

  • is understanding consequences: if you do this, then this will happen. She still challenges what we say sometimes. We have to stick to our guns with her, or she'll walk all over us.

  • sits in timeout when she doesn't follow the rules

  • sticks her bottom lip out and sticks her chin out for kisses; it's so stinkin' cute.

  • loves to give hugs and kisses

  • makes me so happy!

Love that girl.

Happy Birthday, Anna!

Anna turned 2 today! I love birthdays, and I especially love my baby's birthday.
We had a party for her on Saturday at our house. It was a much smaller party than last year, and not quite as hectic. I was happy to have our family (that could make it) down for her party: my mom and Andy, my dad and Chris, B's parents, my grandma and grandpa.

Here are a few pictures from her party on Saturday.

I made the same type of cake as last year: strawberry cake with strawberry cream cheese icing
Anna was spoiled by everyone. Don't you love that little pink kitchen? It's the affordable KidKraft version (available at Target or Amazon) of the $700 Potterybarn kitchen - I mean, really. She's already played with it and seems to really enjoy it. She got lots of other gifts - everything from books and babies to a blowup bounce thing! SPOILED.

Anna loved when we sang Happy Birthday to her; she was all smiles. She even blew out her candles - it took her a few tries, but she got it.

I am so happy my grandparents were able to make the trip down (with my mom) to be with Anna.

Picture Drama - again...

One mom told me, "it's called the terrible 2s because it lasts for 2 years." I think Anna fits the profile. SHE's not terrible, she's great, she's funny, she's loving, she's curious, she's independent. Her attitude when she doesn't get what she wants is in fact, terrible.

We went to Portrait Innovations today to get her 2 year old pictures taken. (Side note: I notice that people in KY say "have your pictures made", but I digress.) I picked an early time so she would be at her best, but that didn't work. The photographer was patient, funny, and accommodating, and that didn't work. She screamed (NOOOOOO), she ran away, she rolled around on the floor, she pounded on the screens, and made a scene in the best 2 year old fashion. Oh, and her hair was not cooperating either, so it's just in a pony tail - still cute, but not probably my first choice.I can't be mad at her, she's so stinkin' cute. She is so curious, and she would have rather had time to figure out how everything worked around that place than have her picture taken. We somehow got quite a few happy smiling shots. I love her! I will be crossing my fingers that next year she wants to get her picture taken.

These are a few of my favorites:

Today I am thankful for:
  • a happy, pretty, funny, curious baby
  • pictures to show how my baby has grown over time
  • the weekend

Too much poo!

WARNING!!!!! This is mostly disgusting. Proceed with caution.

I've had too much poo to deal with this past week. I really don't care for it. It puts me on the brink of vomiting, which is not as bad as poo in my opinion.

1. Shelby (the dog) pooed and vomited several times throughout the house the other day. I thought maybe it was from the pieces of rotisserie chicken she got the night before.

2. Today I think there might be something wrong with Shelby because she did not have any rotisserie chicken or anything else to eat yesterday, but pooed on the floor again today. This is not normal behavior for her at all; I called the vet. I hope she's ok. Bryan said he's going to take her to the farm if he has to clean her mess up off the carpet ever again. I think he's exaggerating. He is looking into extending the hardwood floor into the living and dining rooms. We would have to get area rugs and she would still probably find a way to leave her mark on the carpet instead of the easier to clean hardwood.

3. Anna pooed in the bathtub tonight. Why? Why? Why? She hasn't figured out that she needs to be doing that in the potty. It was gross. I had to bleach her toys and scrub the tub. I'm tired of poo.

4. Well, I can't actually write this one, but those of you that work with me probably understand why I'm tired of poo.

5. I went to the DMV today to get the new license plates for the 4-Runner. While I didn't actually see any poo, it's uncertain what kind of germs (from poo and other bodily fluids) contaminate that nasty building. I'm not a germaphobe at all, but that place seriously grosses me out and makes me feel dirty when I leave.

Today I am thankful for:
1. I got my new license plate and will hopefully not have to return to the DMV for a very long time. It was a little uncertain at first, but it all worked out in the end.
2. tomorrow is Friday!
3. Anna is learning new words everyday :)

These things are true - for me anyways

Yesterday several teachers had a little gathering in the hall talking about baby and kid things that people told us or we learned. It had me thinking - what are some things that people told me about pregnancy and motherhood that I found to be true...

  1. There is nothing like the love you have for your child - and it grows everyday.
  2. The last good night of sleep you'll ever have is the night you made a baby.
  3. Kids cost a lot of money.
  4. You do things for your kids you never thought you would do.
  5. You lose all modesty after having a baby.
  6. You will never get your old body back, weight - maybe, body -no.
  7. Once your baby starts walking, you will rarely have a bathroom moment alone.
  8. Nap when your baby naps.
  9. You will do things wrong, and it's OK.
  10. "You know what" happens less often. TMI?

I'm sure there are more little thoughts and tidbits, but these are the 10 I could think of right now.

Today I am thankful for:

  • rice krispy treats
  • winning the basketball pool - $90 that will pay for the scrap booking stuff and pillows that I bought last week
  • B is getting a "thank you" bonus from work in a few weeks

Spring Break Fun

This was a great Spring Break. The weather was awesome, and it is leaving me a little broken hearted that I have to go back to work tomorrow bc the summer-like weather is going to continue. I LOVE hot weather, want to live where it's hot all the time, so I was in heaven with temps in the 70s and 80s.
I took Anna to daycare for a shorter-than-normal days Monday-Thursday, but still time to learn and play with her friends. Then when we got home we played outside. We took walks, she rode her bike, she rode her car, blew bubbles, ran around, just had fun in the sun! All the playing helped her sleep at night, and she didn't wake up screaming to come into our room for several nights in a row!!!

We also got to meet Drew! He is so cute and tiny. I just love babies - I could hold infants forever (until they start crying for food or diaper change). I forgot what it was like to hold a new baby; he was so light. He is blond and hairy like my sister, and I think his face resembles my brother's and sister's. Anna really likes babies - real and pretend, so she liked meeting Drew and holding him and giving him kisses. She was gentle with her hands, but she doesn't understand how to control her body around a newborn, so I just had to be very watchful.

Anna and Jackson also had an Easter Egg Hunt. They had a great time gathering all the eggs and opening them to eat the candies inside. Anna has a HUGE sweet tooth, so the candy has to be hidden. Anna and Jackson had a great time playing together; I wish we lived closer so they could play together more often. It's one of life's difficult things - getting 2 year olds to get their picture taken, but this one turned out pretty cute.

We enjoyed Easter Brunch with my Mom's family today. It was yummy and fun, but we are all pretty tired. Back to the grind tomorrow. Hope all goes smoothly.
Today I am thankful for:
1. Easter Brunch
2. open windows
3. seeing family this weekend
